DIY Zesty Gut-Boosting Wellness Shot
If you’ve been in the grocery store lately, you’ve probably noticed those pricey, tiny wellness shots hanging out in the cold case, promising everything from better digestion to eternal youth (okay, maybe not eternal youth, but close!). So why not skip the store-bought versions and make your own gut-loving wellness shots right at home?
This recipe isn’t medical advice, of course—it’s just a fun way to give your gut some extra love! And while these shots pack a punch of nutrients and herbs aimed at gut health and overall health, remember they’re not a substitute for a regular, healthy diet. Now, let’s dive into the good stuff!
Herbs and Vegetables for Gut Health
I love adding homegrown herbs and veg to my recipes! The best part about a wellness shot is that you can use whatever you have on hand, what’s in season, and what tastes best to you!
Let’s take a closer look at what makes each ingredient in this recipe a gut health superstar:
- Black Pepper: Piperine in black pepper boosts the bioavailability of nutrients, especially turmeric, making sure your body gets all the goodness.
- Licorice root: Soothes the digestive tract, supports gut healing, and helps balance stomach acid. Its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties promote a healthy gut lining and a balanced microbiome. As an adaptogen, it also helps the body manage stress, which is essential for gut health.
- Ginger: Known for reducing nausea and soothing inflammation, fresh ginger root helps stimulate digestive enzymes for better nutrient absorption.
- Lemon Balm: This herb is the calm in the storm, helping with stress-related digestive issues and easing cramping or nausea.
- Carrots: High in fiber and beta-carotene, carrots feed your gut’s good bacteria and promote a balanced microbiome.
- Apple Cider Vinegar: ACV supports gut health by balancing pH levels and promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria. It’s especially great for those with low stomach acid. You always want to dilute ACV before taking as a shot!
- Lemon Juice: A burst of acidity to stimulate digestion and liver function, essential for breaking down fats and keeping things moving.
- Turmeric: Turmeric root’s anti-inflammatory magic is essential for a healthy gut lining and can help ease digestive inflammation.

Step by Step Instructions
You can make this recipe in either your blender OR in a juicer! The steps are similar, but the blender will simply require a bit more work!
Step 1: Prep the Ingredients: Peel your carrots, lemons, and ginger.
Step 2: Gather all ingredients and set up juicer. If using a blender, you will also need something to add an additional 1/2 cup of water and use something to strain the final mixture.
Step 3: Juice all of the ingredients, one by one. I like to add the liquid last to get out all of the pulp and make sure every last drop makes its way into the cup.
Step 4: Pour your wellness shots into your storage containers.
Storage Tips for Freshness
These shots should last 5 to 7 days in the fridge if stored in a sealed, airtight glass container. Here’s how to keep them fresh:
- Freshness Check: If you notice any change in smell, taste, or color, it’s probably time to make a fresh batch.
- Glass Containers: Go for glass with tight-fitting lids to keep flavors intact and prevent reactions with the acidity.
- Shake It Up: Ingredients may settle, so give each shot a little shake before drinking.
Serving Suggestions
Frequency: Take one shot daily for maintenance, or as needed after a heavy meal to aid digestion.
Customize Your Wellness Shots
- For Extra Sweetness: Add a touch of raw honey to balance out the tanginess of the ACV and the spice of the ginger.
- For a Metabolism Boost: Toss in a pinch of cayenne pepper for some extra kick and metabolism support.
- For a Milder Flavor: If the ACV is a bit intense for you, try cutting the dose in half or diluting each shot with a bit of water or even orange juice!
