Why I Use Herbs Instead of Essential Oils: Know the Difference

In the world of natural living, essential oils have become immensely popular. They’re touted for their aromatic qualities and powerful properties. But as a modern homesteader trying to love a more toxic-free life, I’ve found myself turning more often to whole herbs instead. In this post, I’ll share the reasons behind that choice, the nuances that differentiate herbs from essential oils, and how I integrate herbs into my everyday routine.

Why I Prefer Herbs Instead of Essential Oils

1. Whole-Plant Balance

Using the entire herb allows you to benefit from all the plant’s compounds working together. This synergy means the naturally occurring chemicals can balance one another out, reducing the chance of side effects. This also means that they work better than the sum of their parts.

Essential oils, on the other hand, are highly concentrated extracts—often focusing on just one part of the plant’s chemical profile, which can make them incredibly potent but also more prone to causing irritation or other issues.

2. Reduced Risk of Overuse and Irritation

Essential oils are ultra-concentrated. A little truly goes a long way, which is why misuse can lead to skin burns, esophageal burns (if ingested incorrectly), and other adverse allergic reactions. Herbs are generally gentler, especially when used in cooking, teas, or salves. If you choose to use essential oils, it’s crucial to dilute them in a carrier oil (e.g., olive, jojoba, or almond oil) and exercise caution—especially around children or individuals with sensitive skin.

3. Sustainability and Resource Efficiency

It can take large quantities of plant material to produce a small bottle of essential oil, raising concerns about sustainability and resource use. Whole herbs require far fewer raw materials, making them a more eco-friendly choice for everyday cooking and home remedies. If you’re aiming for a greener lifestyle, this is a major consideration.

4. Everyday Culinary and Medicinal Versatility

Herbs aren’t just for tinctures or salves; they’re also your best friend in the kitchen. Whether you’re adding oregano to pasta sauce or steeping chamomile for a soothing bedtime tea, you can seamlessly incorporate herbs into your daily life without extra effort. This makes them incredibly versatile—you get flavor plus potential health benefits in every cup or plate.

I do not recommend ingesting essential oils unless guided by a medical professional, so they are not a part of my daily kitchen routine.

5. Honoring Tradition and Cultural Practices

Many traditional healing systems and cultural practices rely on whole herbs in teas, poultices, or infusions. While essential oils can play a role, they’re generally less common in older, time-honored remedies. By embracing herbs, you’re tapping into a rich tapestry of traditional knowledge.

How I Still Use Essential Oils (Occasionally)

  • Aromatherapy: I might diffuse a few drops when the house needs freshening—especially if we’re dealing with strong odors from illness or cooking.
  • Natural Scent Boosters: If I’m gifting a homemade candle or skincare product to someone used to stronger fragrances, I’ll add a drop or two of an essential oil blend.
  • Targeted Skincare: Certain products formulated with essential oils can help with specific issues like acne, but I ensure they’re well-diluted and from a reputable source.
  • Supervised Medicinal Use: I have NOT had a case that I felt the need to use essential oils internally as medicine, but its not something I would rule out if prescribed by a professional.

FAQs About Herbs vs. Essential Oils

1. Can I use oil of oregano in the same way as dried oregano?

No. Oil of oregano (the essential oil) is extremely potent—similar in strength to antibiotics. Dried or fresh oregano used in cooking or teas is much gentler and better suited for everyday use. I even infuse my own oregano oil at home and prefer to use that as a remedy if needed.

2. Are essential oils safe to ingest?

Generally, it’s not recommended unless you’re under the supervision of a trained professional. Essential oils can cause serious internal harm if misused.

3. What’s the best way to start using herbs at home?

  • Add them to your favorite dishes (soups, stews, sauces).
  • Brew herbal teas (mint, chamomile, lemon balm).
  • Experiment with infused oils and vinegars.
  • Try making simple salves for skincare.

Final Thoughts

Choosing between herbs and essential oils doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing decision. Both have valid uses, but it’s important to understand their differences. Herbs tend to be gentler, more sustainable, and easier to incorporate into everyday meals and natural remedies. Essential oils can be wonderfully aromatic and potent, but they require more caution and knowledge to use safely.

In my experience, a whole-plant approach fits perfectly into a relaxed homestead lifestyle.
